Can TCM Help Chronic or Recurring Hives?
Many patients seek TCM when hives keep returning or symptoms are not fully controlled.
Traditional Chinese Medicine aims to manage recurring hives by addressing possible internal imbalances that may contribute to flare-ups, such as:
- Stress-related triggers
- Poor sleep and fatigue
- Digestive imbalances
- Heat or sensitivity patterns
- Weakened overall resilience
By taking a personalised approach, TCM may help reduce frequency, severity, and discomfort over time.
What is TCM Hives
In TCM, hives or urticaria are known as Feng Zhen Kuai (风疹块). Different pathogenic factors can affect the body and cause hives to break out. TCM generally attributes acute hives to be caused by an external invasion of Wind-Heat or Wind-Cold when the body experiences a Wei Qi deficiency (卫气虚).
Wei Qi in TCM refers to our body’s self-defense system against external pathogens. The invasion of external pathogens can occur when the body is exposed to triggers such as allergens or irritants. Chronic hives, on the other hand, are typically attributed to internal Wind and Heat as well as blood deficiency.
Common Hives Triggers to Avoid
Managing triggers is an important part of recovery. Common triggers include:
- Heat and sweating
- Stress and lack of sleep
- Certain foods or alcohol
- Dust, pollen, or environmental allergens
- Viral illness or immune stress
- Tight clothing or friction
Our physicians provide lifestyle guidance alongside treatment to reduce flare-ups.
Causes of Hives from TCM Perspective
Invasion of Wind-Heat (风热)
The body is invaded by external pathogens of wind and heat, disrupting the body's Wei Qi, causing skin reactions such as hives. This is often characterised by sudden onset, red or pink rashes that are itchy and might worsen with heat or in warmer environments.
Invasion of Wind-Cold (风寒)
Similar to wind-heat, the body is invaded by external pathogens of wind and cold, disrupting the body's Wei Qi, causing skin reactions such as hives. The hives may be pale or whitish and triggered or worsened by exposure to cold. The itching might be more intense, and warmth might provide relief.
Damp-Heat Accumulation (湿热)
When damp-heat accumulates in the body, it can manifest as hives. This type of hives often presents with a more persistent or recurrent rash, possibly accompanied by a feeling of heaviness in the body, a sticky or greasy coating on the tongue, and other signs of dampness.
Tips to Reduce Hives Flare-Ups Naturally
- Get adequate sleep and reduce fatigue
- Identify and avoid known triggers
- Manage stress levels
- Avoid overheating when symptoms are active
- Follow dietary advice based on your sensitivities
- Keep skin cool and avoid scratching
