What is TCM Gua Sha Scraping

TCM Gua Sha — also known as Gua Sha scraping — is a natural Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy that uses a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape the skin. This ancient technique helps to stimulate blood circulation, relieve muscle tension, reduce inflammation, and restore the smooth flow of Qi (气) in the body. In Singapore, Gua Sha is popular for both its therapeutic health benefits and its rejuvenating effects on the skin and body.
By addressing the root causes of pain, tension, and stagnation, Gua Sha promotes faster recovery, boosts immunity, and supports overall well-being. It can be used as a standalone treatment or combined with other TCM therapies such as acupuncture or cupping for enhanced results.
How Does TCM Gua Sha Scraping Work
Similar to acupuncture, Gua Sha works by clearing blockages and restoring balance to the body’s energy flow. When Qi is stagnant or circulation is poor, it can lead to discomfort, inflammation, and lowered immunity. Through targeted scraping or rolling motions, Gua Sha stimulates microcirculation in the soft tissue, reduces inflammation, and activates the body’s natural healing processes.
Our practitioners use specialised tools — often made from jade, amethyst, horn, or stainless steel — selected according to the treatment area. Gua Sha is most commonly performed on the back, shoulders, neck, arms, and legs. Facial Gua Sha is also available, which promotes lymphatic drainage, reduces puffiness, and improves skin tone for natural radiance.
During treatment, therapeutic oil may be applied to allow smooth, comfortable gliding of the Gua Sha tool over the skin. Temporary redness or light bruising may appear, which is a normal sign of improved circulation and typically fades within a few days.
